The predicted temperature rise of the same trace using the internal conductor-sizing chart in IPC-2221 is 266 C. Use a baseline chart to calculate the trace temperature for a given current and trace size: The baseline represents the trace temperature rise in a PWB with dielectric only (no internal copper planes). The baseline represents a specific board (dielectric) material and board thickness. (A 1.78 mm thick polyimide PWB, baseline conductor chart is provided in this chapter.) The influence of a copper plane on the baseline trace temperature rise is more significant for thinner boards and boards with lower dielectric thermal conductivity values. The distance from a trace to a copper plane must be known. The closer the trace is to the plane, the lower the temperature rise of the trace. The thickness of the copper plane must be known. As the amount of copper increases, the temperature rise of the trace decreases.

As the number of planes increase, the trace temperature rise decreases, but not as much as the influence from the first plane. The area that the copper plane covers on a specific layer is important. The plane must completely cover the trace in order for it to impact the temperature of the trace. The size of the internal copper plane impacts the amount of heat spreading that can occur:

Figure 16.10 represents estimates of temperature rise as a function of copper plane size and distance from trace to plane in a 0.07 in. (1.78 mm) thick polyimide board. The set of curves in Fig. 16.10 is used with the baseline charts, shown in Figs. 16.5 through 16.8. The first step is to calculate a delta T using the appropriate chart from Figs. 16.5 through 16.8.

While there are also a variety of reinforcements used in base materials, woven fiberglass cloths are by far the most common. Other materials include paper, glass matte, non-woven aramid fibers, non-woven fiberglass, and a variety of fillers. The advantages of woven glass cloths include a good combination of mechanical and electrical properties, a wide range of types for achieving various laminate thicknesses, and good economics.

Woven Fiberglass The process of manufacturing woven fiberglass cloth begins with melting the various inorganic components required for a particular grade of glass. The molten components travel through a furnace and ultimately flow through specialized bushings to form the individual fiberglass filaments and yarns. These yarns are then used in a weaving process to manufacture the fiberglass cloth. The relative concentrations of the components used affect the chemical, mechanical, and electrical properties of the fiberglass.The compositions of a few fiberglass types are provided in Table 7.3. Figure 7.15 illustrates the process used to manufacture the fiberglass yarns. The yarns are then woven into fiberglass cloths.
